Polycythemia, Ablepsia, and Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome: A Case Report
نویسندگان
چکیده
Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) is defined as obesity (body mass index, >30 kg/m2) with daytime hypoventilation (PCO2, >45 mmHg) that is not secondary to cardiopulmonary or neurologic disease. Around 80–90% of the patients with OHS have obstructive sleep apnea and severe arterial oxygen desaturation. Obstructive sleep apnea has been found to be associated with a variety of eye diseases, including floppy eyelid syndrome, glaucoma, papilledema, nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and retinal vein occlusion (RVO). While the association between OHS and ophthalmologic disorders is not well‐known, our case report sheds light on this association.

متن کاملClinical and physiological aspects of a case of obesity, polycythemia and alveolar hypoventilation.
The occurrence of arterial hypoxia with polycythemia usually results from some known type of pulmonary disease or from an abnormal communication between the right and left sides of the circulation. Although arterial oxygen unsaturation has been observed in patients with polycythemia vera (1-4), it is usually of only mild degree. Recently, Newman, Feltman, and Devlin (5) found polycythemia and a...

متن کاملPrimary alveolar hypoventilation in a thin young woman.
To the Editor: Alveolar hypoventilation in association with obesity was described first by Burwell' in 1956. In later years, many cases of this syndrome have been reported.
